Sending seniors on a life experience

Chugiak Lions’ Finish Sheldon presents a check for $3,600 to help NJROTC cadets travel to Pearl Harbor for leadership experience.

Lions are committed to their community in many ways. One way is developing our youth through leadership. Through our Leos program we mentor youth 13 to18 years old to assist them in making good choices and building their future.

Several of our Leos are enrolled in the Chugiak High School Naval Junior ROTC. The NJROTC program has 124 cadets enrolled with two seasoned instructors. Commander Kim Butler, USN (Ret) is the Senior Naval Science Instructor and MSgt. William Dill, who we all know as “Top,” is the Naval Science Instructor. TOP has been instrumental in shaping our youth at Chugiak High School for over 22 years.

There will be 20 seniors traveling for a leadership experience of a lifetime to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A trip of this magnitude is expensive and with all working families, providing additional money is often a challenge. To offset some of the expenses, the Chugiak Lions’ Mr. Finis Sheldon graciously presented a check for $3600 to assist these highly deserving cadets with their travel expenses.

This trip is an opportunity for the Senior NJROTC cadets to experience and relate to the curriculum material in the NJROTC program. The opportunity to tour military installations, live in a barracks, eat in a navy galley and associate with active-duty personnel will be an unforgettable yet rewarding experience.

This orientation trip will offer the cadets an opportunity to assume leadership roles and hone developing leadership skills. Cadets will have an opportunity to observe Navy/Marine Corps installations, military personnel and operations on a first-hand basis and use this information as the basis of a career decision in the Navy/Marine Corps. The cadets will experience various cultures and lifestyles by visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center, USS Missouri, visit an active duty Naval Vessel and tour the historic Arizona Memorial.

The cadets have also raised money to offset the cost of this trip through various fundraisers over the past four years.

Chugiak NJROTC seniors are scheduled to depart on March 30 for Oahu and will return to Anchorage on April 5. They will be billeted in military quarters aboard Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Most meals will be consumed in the dining facility aboard the base.
