Eagle River Lions annual Fishing Derby
Boy it is hard to catch your breath with all the fun activities during Fun Rondy. Now we have the annual Eagle River Lions Kids Fishing Derby, which will be held noon-3 p.m. March 15 at Finger Lake in Palmer.
Fourteen years ago, Pat Mahoney and the Eagle River Lions sponsored a free fishing derby for kids in the local area. It started out at Mirror Lake and then moved to Beach Lake. Due to municipality restrictions, the derby has finally found a home at Finger Lake in Palmer.
The event gives kids and parents a break from the “winter blah’s.” It also gives them a chance to spend time with their folks, plus gets everyone outside into the great outdoors.
The derby teaches kids how to ice fish and how to be safe on the ice. It gives parents and volunteers a chance to help kids develop a new skill and a special attitude of friendship, which they can use in their future lives. In some cases, it also teaches everyone how to work together and remember how much fun it was to be a kid.
All of the ice holes will be dug by volunteers. The fishing equipment, bait and prizes will be provided by Boondock’s Sporting Goods in Eagle River.
Eagle River Lions will be serving hot chocolate and food.
There are three age groups (ages 1 to 4, 5 to 9 and 10 to 12), and prizes are awarded for the biggest fish. Also, some lucky fisherman will win a grand prize. Please everyone come out and support our kids and community. It will be a wonderful experience and a day filled with fishing, hot chocolate, hot dogs, hamburgers with lots of outdoor fun.
The derby is held at the Finger Lake Public Access off Barry’s Resort Road. To reach Finger Lake from Eagle River, head north on the Glenn Highway until you reach the Parks Highway exit. Head toward Wasilla until you reach the Trunk Road exit off the Parks Highway. Take Trunk Road to Bogard Road and take a left on Bogard. Go 1.5 miles down Bogard until you see a sign for the Palmer Elks Club. Turn left at Barry’s Resort Road. From there, travel to the Finger Lake public recreation site. Overflow parking will be at the Palmer Elks Club.
