Some people might know better. But for the few the idea seemed good, at least at the time for the Chugiak High School runners taking part in a second annual 24-hour relay, held in the school’s indoor running track March 6-7.
Twenty-four athletes began the ordeal, with 16 staying overnight and 12 lasting the entire span.
With 11-laps to the mile, athletes completed 1,948 consecutive laps, consumed 14 large pizza, two-plus cases of water, endless oranges and grapes and countless granola bars, reported Chugiak parent and track coach Melissa Hall.
According to Hall, it took a small army of parents to help with the event, which served as a kickoff to the track season.
Ty Jordan ran the most laps, with 320, and Hannah Booher, the top girl, with 127. Roan Hall added 213 and Olivia Mueller, 125, in runner-up (pun intended) contention.
Athletes who completed the 24-hour relay included Jack Ginter, Roan Hall, Ty Jordan, Olivia Mueller, Emily Mueller, Allen Alletson, John Weaver, Austin Potter, Dillon Pratt, Hannah Wilson, Rebekah Johanson and Justin Jette.
