With 11 games in two weeks, the Mustangs varsity softball team enters the second half of the season sporting a 8-3 win-loss record, reported head coach Jim Huber.
After a near-perfect 5-1 record the first week, Chugiak fell to South, 4-1, on April 28, then 10-8, to West, April 30.
Victories were posted against Wasilla, 7-3; Palmer, 30-5, and Bartlett, 10-5.
Huber said the team played well defensively against South but didn’t bring the offense, managing but three hits compared to the Wolverine’s five.
Mustang bats came alive in the 30-5 non-league victory over Palmer, with 12 of the squad’s 14 players recording at least one hit, with Juliette Montgomery’s 4-for-4 showing at the plate the best support for Chugiak pitcher Katrina Butikofer’s four-hitter from the circle.
The team came up just short, rallying for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, in their 10-8 loss to West. Julia Matthew provided Chugiak’s only multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3, with a double and two RBIs.
The Mustangs finished out the week strong however, with Elle Gray and Montgomery combining to pitch a two-hitter in a come-from-behind 10-5 win.
Chugiak scored five runs in the fourth inning, five in the fifth for the victory. Matthew was 3-for-4 at the plate, with Baylee Reeves, 3-for-3, and Emmie Jennings, 2-for-3, reported Huber.
