Boys and girls varsity soccer teams capitalize on non-conference play

The Eagle River Wolves varsity boys and girls squads collected non-league victories, reeling in the King Salmon of Ketchikan High, 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, in actions at Eagle River High Saturday.

Girls’ goal Tara Fisher posted a shutout in the net for the Wolves, with Jessie Scott scoring two goals, and Mallory Garbe the other, in providing the offense. Mykaela Carroll was credited with two assists on the day, with Garbe dishing out a helper on one of Scott’s goals.

Boys’ coach Eric Dearborn reported that Eagle River’s three goals were accounted by Vincent Houston, with two, and Darnell Janson, with one.

The victory came on the heels of a hotly contested 3-1 loss to Bartlett Thursday, said the coach. The Wolves’ lone strike was scored by Jordan Scott.

“Both games were very competitive. We scored first against Bartlett,” he said.

Dearborn noted that the team commanded play on their home field against Ketchikan.

Both teams had also secured victories in out-of-district play on a road trip to Juneau last month.

In Cook Inlet Conference action, the Eagle River girls are 1-7, seeded seventh, while the boys are 2-4-2, in sixth-place. Both teams close out league play May 24, with possible State tournament action held May 29-31.
