Anchorage Glacier Pilots upend Chinooks
Fans were treated to both hope and heartbreak as the Chugiak Chinooks rallied to tie the score, 6-6, in the eighth inning, before yielding five runs in the ninth, to lose 11-6 Wednesday night at Loretta French Field.
The park was crowded for a special Military Appreciation Night, as all branches of the service were on hand, with inflatable obstacle courses and free hotdogs for the children, and loads of reason to cheer for the adults.
The victory elevated the Pilots’ season-mark to 6-3, while the Chinooks dropped to 3-7, despite a 4-1 victory over the same Pilots earlier in the week.
James Nevant, who plays for Notre Dame during the college season, paced the Chinooks from the plate, going 3-for-5. Nevant hit a first-inning triple, and singled in both the fifth and ninth frames. He scored twice and provided one RBI.
Infielder Nick Covello currently has the league’s third-best batting average, of .441, through June 18.
Pitcher Zachary Freeman took the loss, in relief, giving up five runs, including a ninth-inning bomb from the Pilots’ J.J. Wagner, in 1-2/3 innings. Freeman struck out two and gave up two walks as well.
