Local Chugiak Soccer Club teams compete in 2014 Zane Cup
Just like Team USA in the recently completed World Cup, local soccer players had the opportunity to take their game to the next level, taking part in the 2014 Zane Cup, hosted by Futbol Alaska Soccer Club at the Russian Jack Soccer Fields in East Anchorage last week.
Five teams from the Chugiak-Eagle River area participated, including the Blizzards and Lightning in the U10 girls and boys, respectively, the Wolfpack in the U11 boys division, the Avalanche in girls U11, and Ravens in U12 boys.
The tournament is in memorial to Zane Stephl, an Anchorage youth player who succumbed to leukemia in 1999. The tournaments began in 2000.
The Avalanche was unbeaten on day one, posting scores of 2-0 and 0-0, reported coach Diane Johannes. Team goals were provided by Heather Gonyea and Aurora Powell against Kenai in the first round. The team lost in games to the eventual champs, the Rush, both Saturday and Sunday, to finish with a 1-1-2 (wins, loss, ties) record, but were recipients of the division’s Sportsmanship Award.
The U10 Lightning boys team, who finished with a 0-1-3 record, likewise were recognized with the Pele Fair Play Award, said manager Joanne Myles. Myles said the team had had only four practices together prior to the tournament.
The Wolfpack suffered a pair of losses Friday, falling to CISC Velocity, 4-2, and to the Valley Revolution, 3-1, despite a pair of goals by Justin Bennett in the opener, and Miles Harlan’s lone strike in the second game. The team then lost in their lone game Saturday to finish 0-3.
Information was not available regarding the Ravens, U12 boys team.
