Kathleen Jane Hickey, 54
Long time Eagle River resident, Kathleen Jane Hickey, 54, passed away on April 9, 2015 at Alaska Regional Hospital. Her daughter Alison and sister Patty were by her side, as she went to be with the Lord, after fighting a courageous and valiant battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm at The Crossing Church, 22208 North Birchwood Loop Rd. Kathy was born on November 12, 1960, in Sacramento, California into a loving family. Her family left California in 1965, and settled in Eagle River, Alaska, making it their home. In the summer of 1981, Kathy made her way to Dutch Harbor to work for the fishing industry. From there she headed to the International Air Academy in Vancouver, Washington. She graduated from the academy in 1984. She returned to Alaska and got a job at the Anchorage International Airport. She continued working there through the early 90’s. She met her husband there and they were married in 1987. Her daughter Alison was born in 1989, and was truly “the love of her life.” She loved softball and bowling, which she did for many years with family and friends. She was an avid fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. She participated for many years in the Alaska Run for Women, in the Breast Cancer Survivor category. She was proud to take part in it, and it became a family support event. Kathy was a member of The Crossing at Birchwood Church. She loved to volunteer in the nursery. Her great nieces and nephews loved to spend time with her. She was a dear sister and friend to many. She had a kind and giving heart. She was proceeded in death by her parents Ann and Larry Rooney. She is survived by her brother Mike and Sara Rooney of Eagle River, sister Patty Day of Eagle River, brother Tim Rooney and Greta Yarbrough of Anchorage, daughter Alison and her dad Patrick Hickey of Anchorage, niece Kristy Day of Eagle River, niece Kamie and Noah Miller of Eagle River, nephew Korey and Erin Day of Eagle River, nephew Jon and Melanie Rooney of Seattle, niece Jessica and Randy Ecker of Anchorage, niece Jeni and Jamie Walker of Anchorage, and many great nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by Evergreen Eagle River Funeral Home.
