Eagle River pins Mustangs, takes narrow losses in Interior
Eagle River triumphed 44-30 over the Mustangs before heading to the Interior for a tournament over the weekend. Both Eagle River and Chugiak will be in action in Palmer this Friday and Saturday at the Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament.
Eagle River 44, Chugiak 30
Eagle River enjoyed a 44-30 midweek victory over rival Chugiak on the visiting mats but dropped two contests narrowly in the Battle of the Interior to Lathrop and North Pole.
The Wolves had five pins to Chugiak’s three, and won 9 out of 15 matches against the Mustangs. The Mustangs also got six points from a forfeit at 182 pounds.
Earning pins for Eagle River were Grant Burningham (138), Makiak Stafford (285), Robert Lecours (98), Colin Blank (106) and Austin Kraft (113).
Troy Zellers (160), Dawson Budke (170) and Ashton Franchino (132) had pins for Chugiak.
Both Chugiak and Eagle River will be at the Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament in Palmer this Friday and Saturday.
Eagle River 35, Lathrop 39
Stafford and Kraft kept their pins streak alive at Lathrop, and Lecours earned another victory by decision but the Wolves couldn’t benefit from a six-point forfeit win and lost by a single match to Lathrop, 39-35. Jordan Porter (113) and Michael Caywood (182) also earned pins for Eagle River.
Eagle River 36, North Pole 42
The Wolves got 30 points from forfeits but only earned one win on the mats in falling to North Pole. Stafford keeping his weeklong winning streak alive with a pin at 285 pounds.
Chugiak 34, Bethel 45
The Mustangs traveled to the Kuskokwim Delta on Saturday, but after winning five of the first six matches lost ground at the lighter weights as they did against Eagle River in falling 45-34.
Zellers and Budke repeated their wins at 160 and 170, respectively, and Joey Lerch (182), Daniel Fujimoto (285) and Franchino (132) won by pin.
