New reporter joins Star news team
Avid readers of our website (www.alaskastar.com) may have already noticed, but we’ve grown in the last week.
This week’s edition marks the Star debut of the newest member of our editorial staff, veteran Alaska journalist Kirsten Swann. Swann has an extensive background in community journalism, and you may know her name from the popular Mountain View Post blog she started and ran on her own time as a way to create interesting and informative hyper-local news for the East Anchorage community.
We feel extremely fortunate to have lured Swann a bit further up the Glenn Highway here to Chugiak-Eagle River. She brings a passion for local news that was evident from her first day on the job, when she began digging into several stories you’ll find throughout this week’s edition. She’s also handy with a video camera, and if you haven’t already, check out the video she created of a 50th anniversary celebration over the weekend. It’s truly heartwarming.
The addition of another member of our news team will allow us to continue to grow. Our goal is not to be the best paper in Chugiak-Eagle River, but to be the best paper in the state of Alaska. With a highly talented and driven journalist like Swann aboard, we feel we’ve taken a big step in that direction. Hopefully our readers notice the difference in more content online, larger, more engaging newspapers, and greater visibility in the community.
Swann comes to the paper from Alaska Dispatch News, where she wrote for 61° North magazine, the annual visitors’ guide and other special publications. Prior to ADN she wrote for the Anchorage Press and Alaska Business Monthly, and worked as an on-air reporter and web editor for KTVA 11 News.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time at local parks with her three dogs.
If you see her around town, please join us in giving Kirsten a warm welcome to the community. We’re very excited to have her aboard and we hope you are too!
