POLICE BRIEFS: Arson, 3 DUIs among APD calls

On Feb. 6 at around 11:30 p.m., police were called to a residence in the Eagle River Valley for a report that a woman set fire to the carpet in her father’s home. Officers arrested Belinda A. McKinney, 20, of Anchorage and jailed her for first-degree arson.
On Feb. 8 at around 11:32 a.m., police responded to Eagle River High School and arrested a 16-year-old student for allegedly selling Xanax pills to another student. The 16-year-old was taken to McLaughlin Youth Center in Anchorage and charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.
On Feb. 8, police charged two Carrs employees with second-degree theft for stealing groceries beginning in October, 2016. According to police, Virginia C. Lang, 47, of Chugiak, and Joshua A. Varney, 28, of Eagle River, stole “a few thousand’s worth” of groceries from the store.
On Feb. 6 at around 11:17 a.m., police were called by a woman who reported her neclace was missing after she hosted a Christmas party. The case is under investigation.
On Feb. 9, police received a report from a homeowner on Centerfield Drive that someone broke a window on the residence while the homeowner was away, then broke into a safe and stole several guns. The case is under investigation.
On Feb. 8 at around 3:28 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle running in the the parking lot of the Bella Vista restaurant in Peters Creek and arrested the driver, Joleen M. Miller, 25, of Chugiak, for operating under the influence.
On Feb. 10 at around 9:30 p.m., police received a report from a citizen who claimed to be following a vehicle that was unable to maintain its lane and nearly struck other vehicles. Officers located the vehicle and stopped driver Ross A. Allen, 28, of Chugiak. Allen was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of marijuana and misconduct involving weapons for being in posession of a handgun while allegedly intoxicated.
On Feb. 11 at around 10:30 p.m., an APD officer pulled over a vehicle driven by Jaye Keener, 50, of Anchorage, after the officer allegedly saw Keener nearly strike a guardrail. Keener was arrested and charged with operating under the influence.
On Feb. 13 at around 3:16 p.m., police arrested Brandy M. Kalkins, 23, of Chugiak, for assault after Kalkins was allegedly in a physical altercation with a family member.
