Chugiak, Eagle River girls to battle in first round of CIC basketball tourney
A locals-only contest on a busy night at Chugiak high will highlight the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference basketball tournament.
Brackets for the tournament were released early Friday morning and include a battle between the Chugiak and Eagle River girls at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8. Chugiak finished the season 10-4 in the CIC to grab the No. 3 seed, while Eagle River won its last game to go 3-11 and earn the No. 6 seed.
The crosstown clash will precede a boys tournament first-round game between the host Mustangs and West. Chugiak (6-8) earned the No. 4 seed (and the right to host a first-round game) by winning its regular season finale over the Eagles on Wednesday.
The Eagle River boys drew perhaps the toughest test of the opening round. The Wolves are the No. 8 seed and must face top-seeded Dimond — the state’s No. 1 ranked team in the latest Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches poll. However, the Wolves enter the tournament on a hot streak, winning their final two games of the regular season to finish 2-12 in the conference.
Semifinal round games will be played at West High on Friday, March 10, with the finals also at West on Saturday, March 11.
The top two teams in the conference tournament receive automatic bids to the state Class 4A basketball tournament. Teams can also advance to state based on at-large WPI rankings, which are available at the Alaska School Activities Association website.
