Budke goes 1-1 at national wrestling tournament

Chugiak’s Dawson Budke, the 2016 Alaska Class 4A state high school wrestling champion at 170 pounds, reached the round of 32 over the weekend at the NHSCA National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Budke, a senior who wrestled at 160 pounds in the national tournament, defeated Utah’s Tyler Tomlinson 3-1 in the round of 64. Budke ran into a tough opponent in North Carolina’s Isaiah Johnson in the round of 32, falling 11-3 to the eventual fourth-place finisher. Johnson was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2017 North Carolina state championships in the state’s largest classification.
