POLICE BRIEFS: Man arrested for child endangerment; assault suspects sought

On April 5 at around 9:14 p.m., an APD officer was driving on the Glenn Highway between North and South Birchwood when he was allegedly passed by a Ford Taurus doing 111 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. The officer pulled the Taurus over and found the driver, Shawn Bannister, 39, of Anchorage, with an unsecured 9-year-old child in the back seat.

During the traffic stop, officers were contacted by a driver who said Bannister had passed him at a high rate of speed and threw an object out the window that chipped his windshield.

Bannister was charged with operating under the influence and reckless endangerment and issued citations for speeding and failure to properly secure a child. A family member arrived to take the child.


On April 3 at around 10:40 p.m., an APD officer at Chevron in Eagle River pointed out a customer who allegedly showed signs of intoxication. The officer walked up to the suspect’s vehicle and knocked on the window, at which point the man drove away. Officers later spotted the vehicle at the east end of Hanson Drive and found the driver had ran away on foot, leaving a passenger behind. The driver was later found hiding under a car on Easy Street. He was identified as Justin A. Pierce, 28, of Anchorage. Pierce was arrested on an outstanding warrant and also charged with resisting arrest and eluding. Officers did not see any signs of impairment.


On April 4 at around 2:20 p.m., a woman called police to report that a man tried to steal her vehicle while it was parked outside Joan’s Preschool in Eagle River. The woman told police that as she was leaving the preschool after picking up her kids, she remotely unlocked her car doors from about 50 feet away. After unlocking the car, the woman said a man — later identified as Forrest A. Miles III, 32, of Wasilla, jumped into the vehicle. The woman yelled at Miles, who got out of the car and led her on a short chase through the Walgreens parking lot. The woman broke off the chase after watching Miles enter Boondock’s Sporting Goods.

That’s where officers found him. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with attempted first-degree vehicle theft.


On April 3 at around 9 p.m., APD received a report from a man who thought his vehicle had been stolen. It turned out the man’s wife had moved the vehicle without his knowledge.


Anchorage police are looking for a Chugiak man accused of a violent assault on his girlfriend last week.

On Wednesday, April 4 at around 10 p.m., Anchorage police received a report from a woman who said her boyfriend, James Anthony King, 42, of Chugiak, grabbed her by the hair and punched her repeatedly in the head while King was driving and she was in the passenger seat of a vehicle. The woman said King also threatened her with a knife.

The woman said King drove to a parking lot on the Old Glenn Highway. When King became distracted by a person walking near the truck, the woman attempted to jump from the vehicle. As she did so, King allegedly accelerated, striking her with the door. She fell to the ground and King allegedly tried to run her over. The woman ran to a nearby apartment and King fled the scene.

After calling police, the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

As of Tuesday afternoon, King had not been located. Warrants for his arrest have been issued on multiple charges of third- and fourth-degree assault and reckless endangerment.


On April 6 at around 1 a.m., an APD officer stopped a vehicle on the Old Glenn Highway for having illegally tinted windows. A backup officer arrived and stood near the passenger side of the vehicle. While there, the second officer spotted a gun in an open compartment in the vehicle. The driver, Matthew T. Marr, 33, of Wasilla, was arrested and charged with third- and fifth-degree misconduct involving a weapon for not immediately notifying officers he was in possession of a firearm and for being a felon in possession of a handgun.


On April 6 at around 1:48 p.m., police responded to Tips Bar for a report of a man who said he had been sprayed with bear spray. Upon arrival, officers found Isaac M. Ryan, 20, of California, suffering from the effects of bear spray. Sullivan refused to say what happened to him. He was treated at the scene and arrested on an unrelated warrant.


On April 7 at around 6:37 p.m., employees at the Eagle River Carrs store allegedly watched Kyle M. George, 32, of Anchorage, leave the store with a cart full of items he hadn’t paid for. George allegedly pushed and elbowed one of the employees in the face. The employees were able to hold George until officers arrived. He was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery.


On April 7 at around 7:40 p.m., Larissa J. McMahill, 38, of Wasilla, allegedly got into a fight with her child’s father. During the encounter, McMahill allegedly took the man’s phone and slammed his leg in a vehicle door.

McMahill left the scene prior to officers’ arrival, and a warrant was issued for her arrest on charges of fourth-degree assault and criminal mischief.
