Police identify 19-year-old man found dead near South Birchwood Loop
Anchorage police said no foul play is suspected in the death of a 19-year-old Anchorage man found near South Birchwood Loop on Tuesday.
Anchorage Police Department public information officer Renee Oistad said police were called at 2:14 p.m. for a report that someone spotted the body near the side of the road. When officers arrived, they found Zachariah J. Schneider dead in a small vacant lot along the short section of South Birchwood between the Old Glenn and New Glenn highways. She said police determined Schneider’s death was not criminal and likely a drug overdose.
She said the body was found “discarded” alongside the road. No arrests have been made, and Oistad said the circumstances of the case remain under investigation.
Oistad said Schneider’s body was turned over to the State Medical Examiner for autopsy, and that an exact cause of death will take several weeks to determine.
On Tuesday, patrol officers stood near the scene of the death, which took place about half a mile from Chugiak High School. Schneider’s body could be seen covered in a white sheet a short distance from a black car parked along the side of the road. Outside the sheet, a pair of red basketball shoes sat near the body, which was lying about 10 yards from an unoccupied black car parked alongside the road.
Oistad said Schneider’s next of kin were notified.
A GoFundMe.com page has been started by the family, and an Alaska USA bank account in his memory has been opened by his mother, Alaina Thiessen, under the name Alaina Rochelle as a memorial fund for Zac Schneider, account number 4595801.
