A big crowd turned out Thursday as the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks made their annual return to Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak.

The local Alaska Baseball League team lost 4-1 to the Mat-Su Miners, but the outcome didn’t seem to dampen spirits at the park, where hot dogs, hamburgers and split-the-pot tickets were in high demand all evening.

Anchorage mayor Ethan Berkowitz was on hand for the festivities, as was Jordan himself and a handful of other local dignitaries. The low-key opening ceremonies included the first glimpse fans got of a new outfield sign above the center field scoreboard honoring Jordan, who helped bring the team to Chugiak-Eagle River in 2012.

The event also included an appearance by members of the Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, who were honored by the team for their continued support; the CVFRD has been a sponsor of the team since it moved to Chugiak from Fairbanks in 2012.

On the field, the Miners plated single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away from the home side. Gonzaga University’s Nick Brooks drove in two runs for Mat-Su, which improved to 2-0 in league play after back-to-back wins to start the season over the Chinooks.

Micah Pries of Point Loma Nazarene University had two of the Chinooks’ three hits in the game. Chugiak-Eagle River fell to 0-2 in the ABL.

Chinooks reliever J.J. Julian of Sourthern Wesleyan University was a big bright spot for the Fish, striking out five while not allowing a hit in just 2.2 innings of work.

The Chinooks play Friday, June 9 against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage. The Chinooks are also in Anchorage Saturday, June 10, for a 7 p.m. clash with the Anchorage Bucs, also at Mulcahy.

The Chinooks don’t return to Chugiak until June 16, when they’ll begin a stretch of six home games in seven days.
