Local Alaska American Legion Baseball teams have struggled to keep pace with the blistering tempo set by the bullies of the league’s National Division.

Through June 26, Juneau Post 25 and Service Post 28 had yet to be beaten in league play, with Juneau posting a 10-0 record and Service racing out to 8-0.

Those torrid starts left the local teams spinning their wheels, with fourth-place Chugiak sitting at 3-6, a half-game ahead of 3-5 Eagle River. The teams will have a chance to battle for local bragging rights on Friday, June 30, when they’ll square off at 6:30 p.m. at the Loretta French Sports Complex in Chugiak.

Eagle River split a pair with visiting Ketchikan over the weekend, with the home side routing their guests from the Panhandle 12-2 in the opener before falling 5-3 in the second game.

Ryan Gray had two doubles and three RBI for Eagle River in the victory, which also got two hits and two RBI from Kamren Williams and three runs batted in from Chase McGraw.

Eagle River’s scheduled didn’t get any easier Monday, when the team ran into South, the first-place team from the American Division. Post 4 roughed up Eagle River, blasting 11 hits and capitalizing on five errors in a 13-5 win at the Loretta French Sports Complex in Chugiak. Eagle River was scheduled to play East (4-6) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bartlett High.

Chugiak returned from an extended break from league play for a Sunday, June 25 doubleheader against Juneau, and the league leaders showed little respect for Oberg Field, handing Chugiak a pair of league defeats.

Chugiak will look to turn things around Thursday, when the team hosts Fairbanks Post 11 for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Oberg Field in Peters Creek.
