LEGION ROUND-UP: Weekend wins for Chugiak, Eagle River
Wins for Wolves, Mustangs
Eagle River and Chugiak defended their home turf over the holiday weekend.
The Wolves improved their record to 6-5 in the Alaska American Legion Baseball league with an 11-6 win over Kenai’s Post 20 Twins on Saturday, July 1 at the Loretta French Sports Complex. Chase McGraw and Christian Frederick had two hits each for Eagle River, which got three RBI from Aaron Davis. The win was the third straight for the Wolves, which also knocked off Chugiak on Friday.
Chugiak Post 33 bounced back from its loss to Eagle River by posting back-to-back wins over Kodiak Post 17 in a Sunday doubleheader at Oberg Field in Peters Creek. The victories lifted the Mustangs into third place in the National Division with 31 points, two ahead of Eagle River.
Chugiak evened its record at 7-7 on Monday, July 3, with a 1-0 win over East at Kosinski Fields.
Chugiak, Eagle River to play in BP tourney
Both local legion teams will participate in the 23rd Annual BP Invitational July 6-9 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage. The tournament also features Alaska squads East Post 34 and Service Post 28 as well as Napoleon, Ohio, and Walla Walla, Washington.
The tourney will feature pool play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with teams advancing to Sunday’s final round games based on their records over the first three days. Chugiak opens against East on Thursday, July 6, while Eagle River will face Walla Walla Friday morning.

Eagle River knocks off Chugiak

The Eagle River pitcher gave up seven hits in a five-inning complete game on the mound and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate to lead the Wolves to a 15-5 Alaska American Legion Baseball win over Chugiak Friday at the Loretta French Sports Complex in Chugiak.
Olmstead struck out four batters and gave up three earned runs for Eagle River, which improved to 5-5 in the league’s National Division. The game was shoretened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Ryan Gray, Sterling Retzlaff and Abel Davis each had two hits for Eagle River, which racked up 13 hits and took advantage of three Chugiak errors.
Sam Hall and Billy Smith had two hits each for Chugiak, which dropped to 4-7. Chugiak starter Braden Shackelford allowed one run in 2.2 innings before giving way to a bullpen that gave up 14 runs in two plus innings of relief.
