APD says man was drunk, armed and asleep at the wheel

On July 5 at around 6:12 a.m., Anchorage police responded to the area of South Birchwood Loop and the Old Glenn for reports of shots fired involving a small sedan. Officers located a black 2003 Chevy Malibu stopped at the entrance to a nearby trailer court with the driver, 22-year-old Brandon D. Goodwin of Anchorage, allegedly asleep at the wheel with his foot on the brake.

In a statement, police said Goodwin was allegedly drunk and in possession of a handgun:

“Officers approached the vehicle and saw that the rear driver’s seat side window was busted out,” police wrote in a statement about the incident. “The ignition was punched, there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from Goodwin, a pistol was lying on the passenger side floor board with the slide locked back, and a live round was lying on the ground outside the car.”

Officers opened Goodwin’s door, woke him up, and arrested him on charges of operating under the influence and being drunk in possession of a firearm. Officers tried to find the registered owner of the Malibu to find out if it was stolen, but were unsuccessful.


On July 1 at around 12:45 a.m., an APD officer tried to stop a Subaru that was allegedly driving recklessly on the Glenn Highway; the officer ended the pursuit for safety reasons.


On July 2 at around 4:54 p.m., police were called for a report that David Lee Porter II, 42, of Anchorage, allegedly punched and verbally threatened his daughter while driving to her mother’s home. Porter left the area prior to police arrival. Officers obtained an arrest warrant on two counts of domestic violence assault. As of Tuesday, July 11, Porter was still wanted by police.


On July 2 at around 8:34 p.m., police were contacted by a resident of Heritage Court who reported the window of a pickup camper shell had been hit by an object and broken. The incident happened while the owner was not at home. The case is under investigation.


On July 4 at around 11:34 p.m., a citizen called police to report a vehicle driving erratically on South Birchwood Loop. Officers stopped the vehicle, which had six occupants. Police allegedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle. One of the passengers, a 17-year-old male, was allegedly in possession of marijuana and was charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.


On July 4 at around 11:41 p.m., police were called to Rambler Road for a report that Kyle W. Smith, 28, of Chugiak was brandishing a BB gun at neighbors and allegedly yelling racial slurs during a dispute. Police said neighbors were afraid Smith would shoot at them. He was arrested and charged with three counts of third-degree assault.


On July 5 at around 6:12 a.m., police were called about a vehicle swerving on the Glenn Highway. Officers pulled the vehicle over and arrested Sophie M. Pyle, 29, of Delta Junction for driving under the influence.


On July 5, police took a report that someone found a bag containing a coloring book and used needles at the Tesoro gas station in Eagle River. Police took the items into evidence.
