GAME DAY: Wolves to host familiar foe in season opener

Saturday, August 12, 2017 - 11:30

Eagle River will open its season against the last team it beat when the Wolves host Ketchikan at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 12.

In last year’s clash at Ketchikan, the Wolves picked up their first road win in three years with a 47-28 triumph on Revillagigedo Island. This year’s game will be played in front of the home fans at the Wolves’ Den, where Eagle River went 1-3 last season.

Wolves head coach Bob Adkins said he thinks his team matches up well against the Kings.

“We’ll be competitive,” he said.

After nearly three weeks of practice, Adkins said he expects his team will be more than ready to go Saturday.

“The kids are getting excited,” he said.

In last year’s win, the Wolves got five touchdowns from Hunter George, who has since graduated. However, the team has had a large influx of talent from the junior varsity ranks, and Adkins said he’s hopeful the squad can get its season off on a positive note against the Kings.

“We’ve got to get some excitement, we’ve got to get some wins,” he said.

The nicest thing about Saturday, Adkins said, will be hearing the first whistle blow.

“We are looking forward to hitting the grass and getting our season going,” he said.
