Matanuska Electric Association issued an urgent warning Tuesday, Aug. 15 about an ongoing phone scam targeting the cooperative’s members.

According to an email sent out by MEA public relations supervisor Cassi Campbell, the con artists have manipulated phone systems so their caller ID reads ‘MEA Outage Line.” Campbell said the callers are demanding immediate payment and threatening to cut off members’ electricity immediately.

“Please protect yourself!” she wrote. “Hang up immediately and call MEA (phone numbers) if your receive suspicious phone calls.”

The cooperative has received multiple complaints in recent days about the fraudulent callers, Campbell said.

Campbell also sent out a list of reminders of things MEA representatives will not do, including asking to meet members to meet in person to pay a bill, sending members to a location other than an MEA office to make a payment, or asking members to call an 800 number to make a payment. Additionally, MEA will not accept credit card information directly from members.

Instead, MEA representatives will transfer members to the cooperative’s voice response number, which is 888-478-6714. Members can also pay their bill online at

MEA serves customers in the Mat-Su Valley and Chugiak-Eagle River areas. For more information about the cooperative, visit
