SPORTS ROUND-UP: Chugiak swimmers sweep, Wolves’ shooters stay sharp

Izzy Powers and Cheyenne Burke won twice for the Chugiak girls, while Dalton Lodzins was a double winner for the Mustang boys as Chugiak swept West in a Cook Inlet Conference swimming and diving meet Friday, Oct. 13 at West High.

Powers won the 200 yard freestyle and 100 backstroke and Burke won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly for the Chugiak girls, which earned a 106-70 win over the Eagles. Other individual winners included Lydia Ekstrom in diving and Shelby Thompson in the 500 free.

Lodzins won the 100 breaststroke and 100 free for the Mustangs, who won 115-63 behind wins from Lodzins, Zach Cole (200 free), Reid Blackstone (50 free) and Jeremy Petrie (100 back).

The Eagle River girls earned a 96-56 CIC swimming/diving win over Service on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Chugiak High pool, while the boys team fell 101-68 to the Cougars.

Katherine Horning won the 100 and 200 yard freestyle races for the Eagle River girls, who also got a double win from Gracie Keen in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Anna Schlimgen (50 free) and Kara Johnson (200 individual medley) also earned individual wins for the Wolves.

John Heaphy won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke for the Eagle River boys, who also got a win from Sam Horning in the 100 freestyle.

Volleyball rivals set to meet in season finale

Chugiak and Eagle River will complete their Cook Inlet Conference regular season with a clash Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Chugiak High. The match will be the final regular-season contest for both teams, who will begin Region IV play Oct. 31 at Service High.

Eagle River shooters stay sharp

Eagle River’s riflery team remained undefeated with a 5-2 win over Service on Friday, Oct. 13.

The Wolves’ Ashtin Bennett led all shooters with a 289 to help the Eagle River A team to a four-point win. Ian Soellers added a 284 for the Wolves. Colby Fletcher led the B team with a 278 as the Wolves won both the A and B competitions.

Chugiak’s Hannah Fitzgerald was the Mustangs’ top shooter on Friday with a 284, but it wasn’t enough to keep West from earning a 7-0 sweep.
