Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information office. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
On Oct. 22 at around 8:45 p.m., police received a call about a vehicle weaving on the Glenn Highway with two flat tires. Shortly after the call began, the caller told dispatchers the Subaru drove off the road and crashed into a tree, with the male driver then walking away. The caller gave police a description of both the man and his vehicle.
Officers arrived, found the vehicle and after patrolling the area found John J. Pinckney, 29, of Wasilla. Pinckney allegedly matched the description of the man who drove into the tree, and he was arrested on charges of operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash. He was also cited for careless driving and no proof of insurance.
On Oct. 15 at around 6 p.m., police were called about a vehicle that had been idling at the dead-end at the corner of Old Eagle River Road and Foothill Avenue for at least 20 minutes. Officers found two people in the vehicle, including a passenger, Sheila M. Ellis, 21, of Eagle River, who allegedly showed signs of intoxication and had a bottle of alcohol next to her in the center console. Officers found Ellis was on probation for a previous domestic violence case and was not allowed to consume alcohol. She was arrested and taken to the Anchorage Jail for violating conditions of release.
On Oct. 14 at around 7:49 p.m., an APD officer was called to the Fred Meyer parking lot for a report that two people were passed out inside a vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle, Michelle J. Wittie, 22, of Anchorage, was arrested for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court.
On Oct. 15 at around 2 a.m., an APD officer stopped to check on an occupied vehicle parked after-hours in a business parking lot. The officer found the driver of the vehicle, Susan K. Hill, 57, of Chugiak, was on probation. Hill’s probation officer ordered a search of both Hill and her vehicle, which allegedly turned up cocaine. She was charged with fifth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.
OPERATING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
On Oct. 17 just after midnight, and APD officer allegedly spotted a vehicle driving 95 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. The officer pulled over the vehicle, during which time it allegedly almost struck the guardrail. The driver of the vehicle, Dorothy E. Kolerok, 41, of Palmer, allegedly gave the officer a false name and Social Security number, but the information she gave didn’t match information in the officer’s computer. The officer was eventually able to ascertain Kolerok’s true identity, at which time she was arrested for operating under the influence and providing false information. She was also cited for driving while license revoked and speeding.
On Oct. 18 at around 1:30 a.m., an APD officer stopped a vehicle on the Old Glenn Highway near North Eagle River Loop for an alleged equipment violation and issued citations to Roderick B. Sanders, 47, of Anchorage, for driving while license suspended, no proof of insurance and for not having his real license plate illuminated.
During the traffic stop, the officer discovered a passenger in the vehicle, Frances A. Haas, 53, of Palmer, was on parole. The officer contacted Haas’s parole officer, who asked the officer to search the vehicle. The search allegedly found drug paraphernalia, empty alcohol “shooter” bottles and a container that allegedly contained cocaine residue all within Haas’s reach, according to APD. Haas was charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.
On Oct. 18 at around 4 p.m., APD received a report that someone had broken into the GCI cell tower in the woods north of Chugiak High School. According to APD, the suspects broke in through a door and set a trash can on fire. The case is under investigation.
Shortly after midnight on Oct. 25, APD was called for two separate reports of domestic violence.
According to APD, a man reported that on Oct. 24, Marisol Cornwell, 32, of Eagle River, broke his iPad, TV and a phone. The man told police she also allegedly scratched his arms during the altercation. Cornwell was charged with assault, criminal mischief and family violence.
On the night police were called, the man reported he and Cornwell had got into an argument over a phone, during which she slapped him in the face several times. The man called police, but Cornwell allegedly grabbed the phone and hung up. She was charged with assault, interfering with the report of a domestic violence crime and family violence.
On Oct. 20, APD was notified that a bank employee found a counterfeit $20 in a deposit that came in the night before from the Birchwood Saloon. The case is under investigation.
On Oct. 13 at around 9:15 p.m., an APD officer reportedly spotted a vehicle driving on the Glenn Highway at approximately 90 MPH. The officer tried to pull over the white Dodge pick-up, but the vehicle allegedly sped up to more than 100 MPH and the officer discontinued the pursuit.
On. Oct. 28 at around 6:32 a.m., police received a call about a Chevy Silverado speeding and swerving on the Glenn Highway near Fort Richardson. Officers followed the vehicle to the intersection of Gambell and 6th Avenue in Anchorage, where they pulled it over and took all three people inside into custody.
After getting permission to search the vehicle from its owner — who police said was not on scene — officers allegedly found a loaded handgun inside.
The driver of the vehicle, Dustin R. Petrin, 32, of Wasilla, allegedly refused field sobriety and Breathalyzer tests and was taken into custody on charges of operating under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test and being drunk in possession of a firearm.
On Oct. 21 at around 12:50 a.m., APD received a report that two four-wheelers had been stolen from the backyard of a home on Dogwood Street. Three days later, one of the four-wheelers was found abandoned in the woods near Almdale Avenue. The following day, the second vehicle was found behind the Bear Mountain Grill. The case is under investigation.
On Oct. 26 at around 11:37 a.m., police received a report that someone shot a weapon in their apartment above Alaska Velo Sports. The bullet went through the floor into the business, which was closed. No charges were filed or arrests made, but APD said the case remains under investigation.
