UPDATE (Monday, Dec. 11, 2017):

Police on Monday identified the victim in an apparent fatal vehicle crash on the Glenn Highway as 23-year-old Matthew Tubin.

According to Anchorage Police Department spokesman MJ Thim, a number of questions remain about the crash, which was first reported at around 2:17 p.m. Saturday. Among them: Who was driving the vehicle and why the incident was not immediately reported to authorities.

Thim said two people were in the Chevy Blazer that left the roadway sometime Saturday. One of the people — a woman — apparently called a friend after the crash and received a ride to the hospital for a leg injury. The woman also called a member of Tubin’s family, who went to the crash scene and tried to pull the SUV from the ditch. While attempting to pull the vehicle from the ditch, the family member apparently rolled it over Tubin’s lifeless body. Only then were police called to the scene, Thim said.

“There’s still a lot of questions,” said Thim, who noted neither person was ejected from the vehicle; he said it was still unclear how the body ended up beneath the SUV.

Thim said officers determined Tubin was dead before the vehicle was towed over his body. However, he also said there were no signs either occupant was ejected from the vehicle, and said it wasn’t clear how Tubin wound up underneath the SUV. He said it’s also not clear who was driving when the vehicle left the roadway or when exactly the incident took place.

Police said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the case, and Thim said Tubin had been arrested three weeks ago for operating under the influence of alcohol.

The investigation is ongoing.

Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage police responded to a fatal car crash on the Glenn Highway near the Old Glenn Highway (Palmer Alternate) interchange Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, a man was found dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash, which was reported at around 3 p.m. Saturday. In a brief Nixle statement, the department said the cause of the crash was under investigation.

“The preliminary investigation has found this to be a single vehicle crash,” police wrote. “The driver of a white Chevy Blazer drove into a ditch. An adult male was found deceased at the scene. An adult female was driven to the hospital by a friend with a leg injury.”

Police did not say who was driving or provide any other details about the crash, which caused the closure of one northbound and one southbound lane of traffic for several hours while investigators worked the scene. APD said the scene was cleared at around 6 p.m.
