Young tracksters impress at Frosh/Soph meet
The Chugiak boys and Eagle River girls track and field teams showed they’ve got plenty of rising stars Friday and Saturday at the annual Frosh/Soph meet at Dimond High.
The Mustang boys won the meet by 30 points over second-place Dimond, while the ERHS girls were second only to South in the eight-team meet.
Freshman phenom Emily Walsh won three events for the Eagle River girls, pacing the field in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter events.
Freshman sprinter Alexus Babb won the 400 and placed third in the 100 for the Chugiak girls, who were fourth in the team standings.
Sophomore Hyrum Nelson also shined in the distance events for Chugiak, winning the 1,600 and placing second in the 800 and 3,200. The Mustangs got another individual win in the 300 hurdles from sophomore Justin Nevells, who also placed second in the 110 hurdles.
Sophomores Joshua Tripp (shot) and Andrew Hamilton (discus) swept the throws for the seventh-place Eagle River boys.
There will be a “Last Chance” meet Thursday, May 10 at West High for athletes still trying to set times and distances for the region meet. On May 11-12, ASD teams will travel to Machetanz Field in Palmer for the annual Palmer Relays. The Region IV meet is May 18-19 at Dimond High, with state set for May 25-26 in Palmer.
