Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information office. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

On May 7 at around 8:21 a.m., police received a report that someone had thrown rocks at a window at Fire Lake Elementary School, cracking a window. The episode is at least the sixth incident of vandalism in the area — and fourth at the school — since the end of March. There have also been broken windows at the nearby McDonald Center.

Forbidden treats

On May 8 at around 1:53 p.m., police received a report that a student at Chugiak High had brought marijuana laced “Rice Krispie treats” to school. Police said charges were forwarded to juvenile justice. Police refused to say whether the treats were homemade or store-bought, citing the pending nature of the investigation. Police refused to say whether the treats were homemade or store-bought, citing the pending nature of the investigation.

Dirt bike stolen

On May 10 at around 6 p.m., police received a report that a blue Yamaha dirt bike had been stolen from outside the owner’s residence on Hillcrest Drive. Police said the dirt bike did not need a key to start and, as of Monday, had not been recovered.

Speeder tracked down

On May 10 at around 6 p.m., an APD detective tried to stop a yellow Kawasaki motorcycle that allegedly failed to yield and was driving 110 MPH in a 65 MPH zone on the Glenn Highway. Police said the detective discontinued the chase and notified police dispatch of the eluding. A short time later, officers allegedly spotted the same motorcycle violating traffic laws, but did not pursue. Instead, the detective and other officers went to the home where the motorcycle was registered. There, they found Aleck J. Bayless, 20, and determined he was the driver. Bayless was issued citations for running two red lights and failure to obey a traffic control device.

Patrol car goes in ditch

On May 11 at around 6:25 p.m., an Anchorage Police Department patrol officer was driving with his emergency lights and siren on while driving to a residential fire when a dark colored SUV allegedly failed to yield. Police said the officer drove off the road to avoid a collision. The officer was uninjured and police said the driver of the SUV did not stop.

Dangerous drivers arrested

On May 11 at around 11:17 p.m., someone called police to report a black Ford F150 pickup weaving on the Glenn Highway. A patrol officer was able to track down the vehicle, which he reportedly watched drive out of its lane and nearly collide with another vehicle. The officer pulled over the pickup and arrested driver Anthony Rue, 28, of Anchorage for felony operating under the influence for having at least three OUI arrests in the last 10 years.

On May 12 at around 10:45 p.m., an APD officer was pulled over alongside the Glenn Highway with emergency lights flashing. While the first officer was pulled over, another officer allegedly witnessed a pick-up truck drive past in the closest lane to the pulled-over officer in violation of the state’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to pull over for emergency vehicles. The second officer pulled the vehicle over and arrested John E. Thompson, 74, of Eagle River for operating under the influence.
