Chugiak’s Nelson named Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year
Chugiak’s Emma Nelson has been named the Gatorade Alaska Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
Nelson, a dynamic 5-foot-11 leaper bound for Oregon State University, won the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Division I Track and Field Meet in May. Nelson was named Athlete of the Meet at the championships — where she set a new state record in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 9 inches — and her three state titles gave her six for her high school career.
According to Gatorade, Nelson’s leap was 38th best among U.S. high school girls at the time of her selection.
Nelson is also a standout Nordic skier who volunteers for Special Olympics, according to a press release announcing her selection.
She’s the second Chugiak athlete honored by Gatorade this year; in the fall, Mustangs running back and linebacker Derryk Snell was named the state’s top footballer.
Also honored by Gatorade Thursday was Galena senior Jacob Moos, who won the Division II 3,200 and 1,600 meter state championships this season. A 4.0 student, the UAA-bound Moos also volunteers for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
