LEGION ROUND-UP: Wolves start second tourney, Mustangs keep winning

Despite scoring 10 runs in its final two at-bats, the Eagle River American Legion baseball team came up just short in the championship game of the Midnight Sun Invitational on Sunday, June 24 in Fairbanks. Eagle River trailed North Pole 10-1 after four innings, but rallied for a run in the fifth, six in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Braden Olmstead went 4 for 5 with two RBIs for Eagle River, which got three RBIs from Christian Frederick.

Eagle River went 2-2 in the tournament, posting a 1-0 win over North Pole on Friday, beating Bartlett 12-2 on Saturday and falling 5-4 to Fairbanks on Saturday.

OnWednesday, June 27, Eagle River defeated East 10-9 to improve to 4-5 in the Alaska Legion Baseball League and 8-6 overall. The Wolves play in the Todd Ryan Memorial Tournament this weekend in Wasilla, opening Thursday, June 28 against Ketchikan.

Mustangs make all-star team

Three Chugiak players made the all-star team during the American Legion College Coaches Camp June 21, earning the right to play against the Anchorage Bucs on a summer solstice exhibition game at Mulcahy Stadium. Making the team were Chugiak’s Trystan Costanios, Christian Cambridge and Austin Bull. The game finished tied 3-3.

Chugiak won its next two league games after the camp, downing Wasilla 4-3 on June 23 and beating Ketchikan 13-9 on June 25. Heading into a Friday clash against South, Chugiak stood at 6-3 in the league and 7-6 overall.
