POLICE BRIEFS: Chugiak High hit by thieves

Tools, trucks stolen from CHS
On Monday, June 25, Anchorage police received a report of stolen vehicles and tools from Chugiak High School. According to APD, someone broke into a maintenance building at the school by prying open a window. Tools and the keys to two Ford pickups were taken, and police said the vehicles were stolen. Both were later recovered, as were the tools, which police said were found on Birchwood Spur Road behind some concrete barriers.
On June 25 at around 10:13 p.m., police were called about a man who allegedly drove drunk from the VFW in Eagle River. Police said the caller gave them the driver’s name, home address and vehicle description. Police went to the home on Chickaloon Street, where they allegedly found James A. Hightower, 64, and charged him with operating under the influence.
On June 28 at around 3 a.m., an APD officer stopped a vehicle on the Glenn Highway for allegedly driving 81 mph in a 65 zone. Police said the driver, Diana H. Evans, 25, of Anchorage was arrested for operating under the influence and driving on a revoked license.
On July 4 at around 3:45 a.m., police were called about someone “doing laps” in the Eagle River Campground parking lot. Police arrived and stopped the vehicle, at which time they arrested driver Tamberlyn D. A. Solomon, 20, of Anchorage for operating under the influence.
Knife call draws response
Shortly before 3 a.m. on June 26, police were called for a report of a disturbance on MacLaren Street. There, they found John A. Nathaniel II, 37, of Eagle River. Police said Nathaniel had allegedly been drinking when he raised a knife while facing his roommate, who they said got scared and locked himself in his room before calling them. Nathaniel was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault.
Man tries to remove wife’s ring by force
On June 2 at around 7 a.m., police responded to a report of an assault on Danny Drive, where Anthony M. Riley, 47, allegedly got into an argument with his wife. Police said Riley tried to forcibly remove a ring from the woman’s finger, which they said left her with visible injuries. Riley was arrested and charged with assault.
On June 26, police received a report that someone cut a hole in the fence surrounding Publix Self Storage and also cut a lock off an empty storage unit.
On June 26 at around 6:45 a.m., police received a report that someone broke into a locked garage on E. Lake Ridge Drive and stole several items, including tools. Police said nobody was home at the time.
On June 27 at around 4:27 a.m., police responded to an alarm at the Three Bears store on Birchwood Loop, where they found the front door had been pried off the ATM machine; police said an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen and a case is pending.
On June 28 at around 1 p.m., police were called to a residence on Teklanika Drive, where the homeowners reported a burglary. According to police, the homeowners said they were out for a walk when someone broke into their home through an unlocked back door and stole several items.
Gunpowder found, disposed of
On June 28, police were called by a woman who said she was cleaning her dead father’s home and found five pounds of gunpowder the man used for reloading ammunition. Police responded and collected the powder for proper disposal.
Skater, driver get into altercation
On June 2 at around 11:13 a.m., police received a report of an altercation between a driver and a skateboarder on Hiland Road. According to police, the driver allegedly pulled alongside the skateboarder, took his picture, then pulled ahead of the skater and “brake checked” him. Police said the photos the driver took were later posted to social media. Police said no charges were filed because they could not find probable cause any crime was committed.
Vehicle stolen, found
On July 6 at around 9:30 a.m., police received a report that a Honda Accord had been stolen from a driveway on Iris Way. Police said the vehicle was locked and there were no keys inside. The Honda was found unoccupied in Anchorage later that same day.
