LEGION BASEBALL: Mustangs sweep through Interior; Wolves fall in Juneau

Tuesday, July 17, 2018 - 14:23

First-place Chugiak stormed through the Interior undefeated over the weekend in Alaska American Legion Baseball play.

The Post 33 Mustangs opened their road trip with a 5-3 league win over North Pole on July 13, followed by back-to-back wins over Fairbanks on July 14. Chugiak completed its perfect road trip with a 7-4 nonleague win over North Pole.

With the wins, Chugiak improved to 12-3 in the league and 17-9 overall. Through July 17, Chugiak was six points ahead of Juneau, which was 11-1 (45 points). Teams are awarded four points for a league win and one for a loss during the 18-game league schedule. The top three teams in each of the league’s two, eight-team divisions advance to the state tournament, which will be held July 27-31 at Mulcahy Stadium.

Eagle River’s hopes of a state tournament bid came to an end during a winless trip to Southeast over the weekend. The Wolves were eliminated from a chance at the tourney after dropping three straight league games to Juneau in the Capital City. Eagle River fell 5-1 on July 13, then dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. Eagle River’s trip ended with a 16-3 nonleague loss to Juneau on Sunday.

The losses dropped Eagle River to 4-10 in the league and 8-19 overall and officially eliminated the team from state playoff contention.
