APD: Walmart shoplifter pulls knife, gets arrested
Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information department. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Shoplifter faces assault charge
On July 14 at around 5:19 p.m., police were called to the Eagle River Walmart for an aggressive shoplifter. Police said they talked to Walmart personnel, who told them a man and woman in the store took a gym bag off the shelf and started filling it with items. Police said security told them they confronted the couple, at which point the man pulled out a knife before dropping the bag and leaving.
Police said they arrested Jamal H. Jenkins, 40, as he was walking on the sidewalk outside the store and charged him with first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and violating conditions of release. The woman with Jenkins was identified as Erica S. Marinay, 36, of Anchorage; she was arrested and jailed on an outstanding warrant.
On July 16 at around 10:40 a.m., police received a report that someone entered the unlocked back door of a home on Vasili Drive and stole several items while the homeowner was away.
Property line dispute
On July 17 at around 2:12 p.m., police received a report of a verbal dispute over a property line between two people on Annie Pear Circle in Chugiak. Police said one person pulled a handgun, but didn’t point it at anyone and there was not enough probable cause to file charges.
Motorcycle recovered, reported stolen
On July 17 at around 6:37 a.m., someone called police to report a man trying to jump start a motorcycle on Mercy Drive. Police said the men who were with the motorcycle and another vehicle fled the scene before police arrived; officers said they then seized the vehicles for safekeeping.
The next day, police received a report that a motorcycle theft had been discovered at Team CC when an employee noticed a hole had been cut in a chain link fence and the bike dragged through. No arrests have been made.
On July 18 at around 3 a.m., a locked Chevy Tahoe with a debit card inside was reported stolen from the Eagle River Microtel. Police said the debit card was fraudulently used and officers were told to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle.
Later that morning, an officer spotted the vehicle on the 6400 block of Rockridge Drive in Anchorage, according to APD. Police said the officer tried to stop the Tahoe, but discontinued the chase due to the suspect’s dangerous driving. As of July 24 the vehicle had not been recovered.
Police said a separate vehicle found on Rockridge was found with license plates that didn’t belong to it, so they confiscated them as evidence.
On July 19 at around 1:41 a.m., police were called to Rusticate Drive, where they found Alvin W. Sexton lying in a driveway claiming to have been hit by a car driven by his girlfriend. However, police said their investigation found Sexton and his girlfriend had been drinking at a different residence when he jumped on her car and hit it, injuring his hands. Sexton was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.
On July 19 at around 9:14 p.m., an officer stopped a Volkswagen for allegedly speeding and failing to maintain its lane and subsequently arrested Austin L. Quesenberry, 21, of Eagle River for operating under the influence.
On July 20 at around 6:30 p.m., police received a report that a locked 2006 red GMC pickup with no keys inside had been stolen from the parking lot near Shine’s Restaurant. As of Monday, the truck had not been recovered.
