Mark Eagles and Emily Walsh won their first Maddy’s Run 5K race championships Saturday at the fourth annual event at Eagle River High School.

Eagles won in 18 minutes, 16.2 seconds, with Andy Baalerud (18:34) second and Michael Olson (19:28.9) finishing third.

Eagle River High School students swept the top spots in the women’s race, with ERHS sophomore Emily Walsh winning in 21:02.2 over Helen Wilson (21:37.3) and Claire Nelson (21:54.2).

A total of 149 runners participated in the race, a fundraiser for two local children — Kiyah Tuttle, 16, and Phoenix Mendoza, 3 — who are currently battling cancer. West High head football coach Tim Davis finished 12th, one day after his team lost in the state Division I football championship game. Phoenix’s dad, Frank, is an assistant coach at West, and his older brothers Bubba and Koko are players on the team.

The event was named for Maddy Brandl, a Homestead Elementary student who died in 2016. The innaugural Maddy’s Run was held in 2015 as a fundraiser for Brandl, and organizers have continued to host it each year in her honor.
