Schools in Chugiak-Eagle River required some of the most expensive emergency repairs in the wake of the Nov. 30 earthquake.

According to an Anchorage School District memo, the district entered into $5.65 million in large emergency procurement contracts for projects at five area schools — Chugiak High, Fire Lake Elementary, Eagle River High, Chugiak Elementary and Gruening Middle School.

The district used emergency procedures to raise its task order limit in order to accommodate the contracts of more than $100,000.

Eagle River-based Eklutna Inc. received repair contracts at all five area schools. In all, approximately $11.75 million in emergency contracts of $100,000 or more were awarded to six Anchorage area companies.

The figures represent a fraction of the total cost thought needed to repair earthquake damage across the district. In December, ASD submitted its initial cost assessment to the state at between $25 and $50 million. The district expects much of the cost will be covered by state and potentially federal disaster recovery funds.

Damage at local schools ranged from water on the floors to fallen ceiling tiles to busted pipes, broken computers and smashed windows.

Damage was most severe at Eagle River Elementary School and Gruening Middle School, both of which are closed through at least the 2019-20 school year. Eagle River Elementary was built in 1961 and underwent a major renovation in 1984. Gruening was built in 1983 but didn’t open until 1984 due to structural issues with its initial construction.
