District announces times, dates for Eagle River schools meetings

Wednesday, February 6, 2019 - 19:44

The Anchorage School District will hold a series of public meetings to discuss the future of a pair of Eagle River schools forced to close due to earthquake damage.

The district will hold meetings along with an ad hoc committee from the Anchorage School Board on Feb. 12 and 21 at Chugiak High and Feb. 13 and 20 at Eagle River High. All four meetings will start at 6 p.m. The meetings at Chugiak will address secondary education and the meeting at Eagle River high will discuss elementary education options.

The purpose of the meetings will be to discuss how to best deal with the ongoing closures of Gruening Middle School and Eagle River Elementary. Both schools were heavily damaged in the Nov. 30, 2018 earthquake and both are closed through at least the 2019-20 school year. Students from Gruening have been attending Chugiak High, while Eagle River Elementary students have been split between Homestead, Ravenwood and Birchwood ABC.

Here’s the district’s complete announcement:

School Board Member, Elisa Snelling, Chair of the Board Ad Hoc Committee for Chugiak/Eagle River, and the Anchorage School District look forward to meeting with the community to share information and receive input regarding next school year and the education of students in those communities. These meetings will focus on short-term solutions for the education of students displaced due to building closures.

Long-term planning for the future of Gruening Middle and Eagle River Elementary schools will not be discussed during these meetings. The District continues to gather information about buildings impacted by the earthquake. There will be an opportunity to address long-term planning by the community in March.

During these meetings to discuss short-term solutions, the School Board and District Administration will provide information to ensure the public is aware of educational program options and to seek input to enhance the educational experience for students of the Chugiak/Eagle River area. We want to know your thoughts and concerns. A survey will be sent to all Chugiak/Eagle River area school families regardless of whether or not you are able to attend a meeting.
