Local standouts shine at state ski meet
Chugiak’s Michael Earnhart finished third in the overall boys Skimeister standings to lead all local skiers at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State Nordic Ski Championships in Fairbanks.
Earnhart’s performance keyed a third-place team finish by the Mustangs. Teammate Max Beiergrohslein finished 10th in the Skimeister standings, which were based on the combined times from Thursday’s classic technique and Friday’s freestyle races.
Earnhart finished fifth in the boys 7.5-kilometer interval start classic race Thursday and third in the 10-kilometer mass start freestyle race.
Adrianna Proffitt finished fifth in the girls Skimeister standings to lead local girls. Lindsey Gerlach finished 59th in the individual standings for Chugiak, followed by Kali Smedley (67th), Patricia Casey (74th) and Reagan Blackley (76th).
Girls raced a 5-kilometer classic layout and a 7.5-kilometer freestyle course.
Emily Walsh finished 11th overall for the Eagle River girls, who were fourth in the girls team standings. Helen Wilson finished 15th for the Wolves, Claire Nelson (23rd), Elizabeth Ruehle (56th), Laura Ripp (66th) and Riley Wilson (78th).
Nick Carl finished 31st to lead the Eagle River boys, who were 11th in the team standings. Carl was followed by younger brother Alex in 43rd, followed by Curtis Bay (49th), Carter Gladwill (61st), Michael Olson (71st) and Dylan Garbe (78th).
Team scores were calculated based on combined times from the individual races and Saturday’s mixed technique relays.
