The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free vessel safety checks May 11 and May 18 in Eagle River.

The checks are open to any boater who wants to check the condition of their power or paddle craft before launching. The checks are voluntary and there is no penalty for not passing the check, though many insurance companies do offer a discount for boats that own the Auxiliary’s Seal of Safety.

The checks will take place May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eagle River VFW post (10527 VFW Road) and on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Eagle River Fred Meyer.

The Auxiliary is also accepting used adult and children’s flotation devices in good condition for use in the Kids Don’t Float program.

The vessel checks are part of the 2019 North American Safe Boating Campaign, which runs May 18-24.

For more information or to arrange a free boat check on a different day, call S.E. Thomas at 694-3570.
