Two CHS grads die in murder-suicide
Alaska State Troopers say a 26-year-old Wasilla man shot a 25-year-old Colorado woman then turned the gun on himself in the early morning hours of April 21 in Wasilla.
According to troopers, Tobias Siegel killed Chelsi Baun and himself at shortly before 2 a.m. Both Siegel and Baun (formerly Chelsi Cox) graduated from Chugiak High School in 2005, according to the Star’s archives. However, trooper spokesman Tim Despain said the two appear to have only recently met.
“As far as I know they were just recent acquaintances,” Despain said. “Nobody that we’ve talked to who knew Baun knew of Siegel.”
Troopers say alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.
Despain said the incident took place after four people — Siegel, Baun and another man and woman — returned to Siegel’s home in Wasilla after spending time at a local bar. Despain said Siegel and the other man got into a physical altercation, after which the man fled the home. Despain said the man looked inside a window to see Siegel coming out of a room with a handgun. After fleeing the property, the man heard gunshots from inside the home. He returned to find Baun and Sigel lying motionless on the floor.
Baun was pronounced dead at the scene; Siegel died at a local hospital.
Despain said troopers still don’t know what caused Siegel to act the way he did.
“We probably won’t ever know that,” he said.
