Eagle River High’s most creative students put their talents on display during the school’s Fine Arts Cabaret on Friday, April 5.
The annual event brings together visual and performing arts to help raise funds for the program.
The main objective is to showcase the talent Eagle River has to offer, said fine arts department chair Jacob Bera.
“The primary goal is for the kids to show off the arts program,” he said.
The two-and-a-half-hour event brought students together from the entire arts program. Visual artwork was on display, and the school’s various bands, choir, orchestra and improv group performed.
Having all the fine arts students together is the cabaret’s best aspect, said choir and theater teacher Andrea Lang.
“It’s just fun,” she said.
The cabaret provides a stress-free environment for the performing arts students, Bera said.
“This is a chance for them to relax and let their hair down,” he said. “Just play their instruments and have fun.”
With so much art in the world, it’s important for students to understand what they’re seeing and how to express themselves, Bera said.
“We’re surrounded by the arts,” he said.
Having multiple fine arts courses benefits all students, Bera said.
“It gives them a well-rounded education,” he said.
The curriculum is also important for the students who primarily focus on art, Bera said.
“We want to provide a strong program for them,” he said.
Whether they plan on pursuing art after high school or not, being the focus of a large crowd is beneficial to all students, Lang said.
“It’s nice for them to perform in front of a big audience,” she said. “No matter what they do, it benefits them to get that kind of exposure.”
Fine arts courses also give students an outlet they might not have in traditional classes, Lang said.
“It allows them to be creative in a different way,” she said.
