Event will run through the weekend

Members of the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department are losing their hair.

It’s not the stress of fighting fires and rescuing injured motorists, but a good cause that has the department about to undergo some serious ear-raising.

The CVFD has teamed up with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer with a head-shaving event scheduled beginning at noon Saturday, April 20 at the CVFD’s Latimer Station 31, located at 17124 Old Glenn Highway in Chugiak.

“It’s just a way for us to raise awareness for kids,” said CVFD assistant chief Michael Whitesell.

Whitesell said seven firefighters and one firefighter spouse have signed up to participate in the event, which begins at noon on Saturday.

The department has set a goal of $2,500 in its first St. Baldrick’s event. Whitesell said the money will go to an 11-year-old girl from Wasilla who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Whitesell said the soon-to-be bald firefighters are looking forward to doing their part to help battle cancer.

“We’re going to kinda look like cue balls,” he said.

The event is the centerpiece of a weekend open house that begins Friday, April 19 and runs through Sunday.

In addition to an open house (which will include hamburgers, hot dogs and fire truck tours for the kids), the CVFD is holding a yard sale to raise money for children’s bicycle helmets. Members of the department are bringing items for sale, and community members are welcome to participate as well by contacting the department.

The open house and yard sale will be held Friday, April 19 from 4 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, April 21 from 1 to 5 p.m.
