A fire early Monday, April 22 destroyed a wooden A-frame home on Birchtree Street in Chugiak.
According to Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Jeff Hartley, a neighbor reported the blaze at around 3:10 a.m. Monday morning. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the structure fully engulfed with flames.
"It was fully involved when our guys got there," Hartley said.
The home's occupant awoke to a smoke detector and was able to escape uninjured, Hartley said. However, the man's cat died in the blaze.
Hartley said seven pieces of equipement were brought in to fight the fire. Crews were on scene for about five hours, he said.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
