Chugiak soccer nets wins in Juneau, Eagle River earns sweep over Bartlett

Dimond 4, Chugiak 1

Dimond handed Chugiak its first loss of the season 4-1 on Tuesday, April 16 at The Dome. Holly Brehmer scored the lone goal for the Mustangs, who fell to 2-1-2 in the Cook Inlet Conference and 4-1-2 overall.

The Mustangs play South today (April 18) at 6:30 p.m. at The Dome before meeting rival Eagle River on Saturday, April 20 at 8 a.m.

 

Eagle River 6, Bartlett 0

Eagle River improved to 3-3 after defeating Bartlett 6-0 on Monday, April 15 at The Dome. Mykela Carroll and Allonna Walker scored two goals apiece, and Gaby Mordini and Nikki Boggs added one each.

 

Chugiak sweeps Juneau

Chugiak (4-0-2 overall) earned convincing, back-to-back shutouts over nonconference Juneau-Douglas last week to remain undefeated. On Friday, April 12, Molly Romero, Alexis Day, Holly Brehmer and Jessi Beverlin scored two goals apiece to lead the Mustangs to a 10-0 victory. Ashleigh Sitz and Megan Bear added one each for Chugiak.

The following day, Brehmer, Beverlin, Romero, Marlo Smith and Janissa Arzie scored in Chugiak’s 5-0 win.

“It was a good weekend,” Mustangs’ head coach Paul Brehmer said.

With temperatures in the mid-40s, Chugiak played outside for the first time this season. Both games were held at Thunder Mountain High’s turf.

“It was beautiful,” coach Brehmer said.

 

West 2, Eagle River 0

Eagle River fell to 2-3 in the conference after a 2-0 loss against West on Saturday, April 13 at The Dome.

The Wolves’ lineup was sparse as some of the team left the game to run events at the Prosser-Whitmore Indoor Track and Field Championships, which was going on simultaneously at The Dome.

“We were definitely undermanned,” head coach Trent Boggs said.

Eagle River played hard despite its short roster, he said.

 

BOYS

Dimond 7, Chugiak 1

Brady Sanders scored Chugiak’s lone goal in a 7-1 loss to Dimond on Tuesday, April 16 at The Dome. With the loss, Chugiak fell to 1-4 in the conference and 2-5 overall.

The Mustangs play South today at 4:40 p.m. at The Dome before meeting rival Eagle River on Saturday, April 20 at 9:45 a.m.

 

Eagle River 2, Bartlett 1

Eagle River picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Bartlett on Monday, April 15 at The Dome. Josh Oberlander scored both goals for the Wolves (1-5) in the first 10 minutes. Then, the Golden Bears cut the lead in half.

“It went down to the wire,” head coach Eric Dearborn said.

Eagle River never gave up, he said.

“They fought hard,” Dearborn said. “I was impressed and glad we got the win.”

 

West 6, Eagle River 1

Addie Platt scored the Wolves’ lone goal in a 6-1 loss to West on Saturday, April 13 at The Dome.

With the loss, Eagle River fell to 0-5.

 

Chugiak 1, Thunder Mountain 0

Nikolas Macalino headed a corner kick from Daniel Ogden in the back of the net in the final minute of play to lift Chugiak past host Thunder Mountain 1-0 on Saturday, April 13.

 

Juneau 9, Chugiak 1

Lukas Brown scored the Mustangs’ lone goal in a 9-1 loss to nonconference Juneau-Douglas on Friday, April 12 at Thunder Mountain.

 

Service 3, Eagle River 0

Service earned a 3-0 win over Eagle River on April 10 at The Dome.
