In less than six weeks, Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks players will be arriving in town for their second Alaska Baseball League season in Chugiak.
Some new amenities will be waiting for them at Loretta French Park.
A building that will house two locker rooms, an umpire room and a concession stand should be constructed by June 1, said Chinooks’ booster club president Lee Jordan. The dugouts are also getting an upgrade, he said, and will be expanded to accommodate the larger ABL teams.
To help cover the cost of equipping the concession stand, the booster club is selling 600 raffle tickets for the chance to win an ounce of gold valued at $2,160.
“They’re gonna go fast,” Jordan said.
Tickets cost $25 for one or five for $100. To purchase tickets, contact Jordan at 688-9068 or board member Bill Waddell at 688-2610 or 244-9158 or email email@example.com.
The winner will be announced June 15 during a game that will feature the Chinooks against the Chugiak and Eagle River American Legion all-stars.
Every player has a host family for the summer, Jordan said, but housing for both coaches is still needed. Two, three-bedroom houses are needed for the coaches and their families.
Anyone with an available house can contact Jordan.
The Chinooks had a great season last year, Jordan said, and averaged about 200 fans per game. Jordan said his goal is to give the players the best experience possible so they’ll recruit their college teammates to play ABL ball in Chugiak.
Jordan said he’s eagerly awaiting the first pitch of the 2013 season at Loretta French, which is scheduled for June 10. Like last year, admission to every home game is free.
With a successful inaugural season last year, the Chinooks are also excited to return to Chugiak, Jordan said.
“They all liked it,” he said. “A lot of tears when they left.”
