Summer is on its way!
Punxsutawney Phil was a bit off.
On Feb. 2, the world’s most famous groundhog emerged from his winter den and didn’t see his shadow, foretelling a quick spring and early summer.
That was nearly three months ago, and as of this writing (April 23), there’s snow falling from the sky here in Eagle River. Even with recent sunny skies, deep snow still covers many parts of our area. Baseball and softball games have been postponed, soccer teams remain cooped up indoors and pretty much everyone seems to be asking the same question: Will winter ever end?!?
Fortunately, it will. The summer sun in Alaska is far too powerful, and very soon we’ll begin to see the first real signs of spring in the form of green tree buds, moose calves and, of course, motorhomes on the highway.
That’s why we’ve chosen this edition to give your our 2013 Summer Recreation Guide. With Alaska’s most glorious season nearly upon us, we felt it was high time to give folks something to look forward to in the form of this year’s guide, which provides a snapshot of the many exciting things going on in Chugiak-Eagle River this summer.
The guide begins on Page 12, where you’ll find stories about some of this area’s biggest summertime draws — including the Highland Games, Chinooks Baseball and everyone’s favorite, Bear Paw.
On Pages 14-15 you’ll find a handy calendar, where we’ve compiled some of the fun and interesting events going on around town. We hope you find the calendar useful in planning what promises to be a very busy season.
Whether you plan to hike, fish, camp or simply kick back and watch a ballgame, there’s going to be plenty to do around town in the next few months. And as always, we’ll be there to chronicle the action and bring it to you each week in your hometown newspaper.
From all of us at the Star, we hope you enjoy a safe and sunny summer in 2013.
Let’s get out there and have some fun!
