Chugiak and Eagle River are sending a combined 23 athletes to the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2013 Swimming and Diving State Championships on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9 at Juneau.

The first match of the Cook Inlet Conference volleyball tournament didn’t last long. Fourth-seeded Chugiak made quick work of No. 5 Service with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) on the Cougars’ home court Tuesday, Nov. 5. That was just the start the Mustangs were looking for, setter Anna Ingraham said.

Chugiak’s Pegues earns top football honors

Chugiak High senior Kenny Pegues was named 2013 Lineman of the Year. Pegues also earned first-team honors at offensive guard and defensive line. Chugiak’s Gabe Mingledorff was a first-team selection at running back and a second-team pick as a kick returner. The Mustangs’ Charley Pappas (center) was also a first-team selection.

Relay for Life needs some help. An informational meeting for those interested in volunteering or learning more about Eagle River’s annual event will be held Friday, Oct. 25 from 8-9 p.m. at Jitters.

Eagle River High’s Kenzie Smith has been one of the top Cook Inlet Conference gymnasts all season. She’ll try to keep that trend going at the CIC meet Saturday, Oct. 26 at Dimond High. South High’s Tena Newhouse and Jojo Mills should provide strong competition for the conference’s top spot, Wolves’ head coach Angie Bayer said.

Both Chugiak and Eagle River’s flag football seasons ended in the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference tournament Monday, Oct. 14. Home-field advantage didn’t help the Mustangs, as fourth-seeded West earned a 20-6 win over No. 5 Chugiak at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.

Chugiak, Eagle River swimming split dual

Chugiak and Eagle River split a dual swimming and diving meet Friday, Oct. 11 at Bartlett’s pool. Sammy Burke (200 free, 100 back) and Emmie Jennings (50 free, 100 breast) won two individual events apiece to help Chugiak’s girls edge Eagle River 96-89.

Chugiak finishes sixth at CIC tennis tournament

Diego Velez-Gonzalez (boys singles) earned two double-bagel victories to help Chugiak finish sixth in team standings at the Cook Inlet Conference tennis tournament Oct. 3-5 at Alaska Club North.
