2008 Chugiak High graduate Ramey Weaver will participate in her second Winter World University Games as part of the U.S. women’s national hockey team Dec. 10-21 in Trentino, Italy. Weaver also played in the Games two years ago.
Chugiak and Eagle River cruised to victories in the second week of play in the Anchorage Scholastic Bowling League on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Jewel Lake Bowl. Alex Leibbrand rolled a 231 to help Eagle River’s boys down Service 25-10. Bobby Leibbrand had a high score of 200 for the Wolves.
Eagle River’s Xavier Horton and Gavin Arnold finished third to lead all local wrestlers at the Lancer Smith Invitational at Palmer on Saturday, Nov. 23. Horton earned a 6-2 decision over Service’s Emetrius McLeod in the 170-pound, third-place match.
Chris Ruggles couldn’t have started his first season at the helm of Eagle River High’s wrestling program much better. With just 11 grapplers, the Wolves placed second out of 14 teams at the Bob Bailey Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16 at Bartlett High. East won the team title with 176.5 points and nearly twice as many wrestlers as Eagle River (102 points).
Natalie Stark, Rachel Topf and Kirsten Veech might have been honored during Chugiak volleyball’s senior night in the regular season, but the girls knew it wouldn’t be the final match they’d play in front of a home crowd.
Wednesday, Nov. 13 was a long school day for Kyla Meadows. “I’ve been counting down the hours and minutes today,” she said moments after signing a letter of intent to play volleyball for Dickinson State University at Jitters.
Blake Rinckey, Kyle Johnson and Schuyler Davis each scored hat tricks in Eagle River’s 11-3 win over Bartlett on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Ben Boeke. Blake Halfpenny scored two goals for the Wolves.
Female Chugiak and Eagle River High students won’t have the chance to represent their schools on the ice this season. Chugiak-Eagle River decided to forgo the 2013-14 hockey season after the league went from four to two teams. The Scotty Gomez Foundation is operating the outsourced girls hockey program this year after the Anchorage School District cut it due to dwindling numbers.
Chugiak’s Samantha Burke and Emmie Jennings had a pair of second-place finishes to lead all locals at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2013 Swimming and Diving State Championships held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9 in Juneau.
