Ryan Stewart’s first Alaska Highland Scottish Games couldn’t have gone much better. The 34-year-old from Draper, Utah, won five of eight events and claimed the overall professional title out of a field of seven Saturday, June 29 at Lions Park in Eagle River.

The Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks looked poised to snap a seven-game losing streak, but the visiting Peninsula Oilers had other plans. Trailing by five, the Oilers racked up 13 runs in the final three innings to earn a 15-7 win and hand the Chinooks their eighth consecutive Alaska Baseball League loss Monday, June 24 at Loretta French Park.

Chinooks win home opener

Chugiak-Eagle River swept a home-and-home series against Mat-Su to start the 2013 Alaska Baseball League season. After earning a 6-4 win in extra innings at Hermon Brothers Field on Sunday, June 9, the Chinooks defeated the Miners 3-1 the following night at Loretta French Park. Pitching keyed the home opening victory, head coach Jon Groth said. The Chinooks five pitchers allowed just four hits and only one walk.
