CVFD breaks ground on new fire station

The Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department broke ground Wednesday, July 24 at the site of its new Station 35 on the Old Glenn Highway near Fire Lake in Eagle River. The 10,000-square-foot facility will house five fire fighting and response vehicles, offices, a classroom and serve as the department’s administrative station, said CVFD Chief Virginia McMichael.

Sedan vs. semi truck accident sends pair to hospital

Police spokeswoman Dani Myren said the accident occurred at around 4 p.m. on the Old Glenn Highway near Loretta French Park. Myren said the northbound Fusion, driven by Michael Trudeau, 25, of Wasilla, crossed the center line and struck the southbound truck nearly head-on. Both Trudeau and a passenger, 23-year-old Kayla Ponte, of Anchorage, were taken to local hospitals with what Myren said appeared to be non life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, 37-year-old Melvin Johnson, of Chugiak, was uninjured.

The Chugiak-Eagle River Food Pantry recently got a makeover — and they have Aaron Feinstein to thank for it. For his Eagle Scout project, Feinstein and some of his fellow scouts from Troop 219 replaced old carpeting with new vinyl commercial tile at the pantry, which is located inside Eagle River Presbyterian Church.

Rodeo Alaska wanted to bring rodeo back to Chugiak-Eagle River. Given this year’s Bear Paw Festival theme, 2013 was a good year to start. Under the theme Roundup at the Bear Paw Corral, a rodeo was added to the annual festivities in Eagle River for the first time in several years, said event director Merry Braham. It was a huge hit.

Longtime festival voluneer Mitch Braham took home the top individual honor during the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber’s Bear Paw Awards ceremony Wednesday, July 11 at the Bear Mountain Grill in Eagle River. Braham earned the 43rd Bear Paw Outstanding Community Service by an Individual Award. The Eagle River Nature Center was honored for the Outstanding Organization Award.
