Smart, accomplished and driven

Eagle River High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC dominated the Alaska State Drill Meet competition held Feb. 22, at Service High School, bringing home two first-place and one third-place designations plus winning the academic award for the large school division. The competition included JROTC teams from 13 Alaska high schools. Large school division included teams with 21 or more members on the drill team.

Alaska Air Guard participates in Lava Rescue

Airman from the Alaska Air National Guard’s 176th Wing completed “Lava Rescue 2014,” an 11-day flying training exercise in Hawaii last week. Seventy-seven members of the 210th and 212th Rescue Squadrons, the 144th and 249th Airlift Squadrons, and the 176th Maintenance Group participated in a first-ever opportunity of its kind in the Alaska Air Guard.

Operation Purple Camp

The National Military Family Association is accepting applications for its popular Operation Purple Camp hosted by Camp Fire Alaska. Operation Purple is a free summer camp program to support military children, ages 7-17, dealing with the stress of war and deployment.

Snowmachiners rescued from Talkeetna Mountains

Airmen with the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, 211th and 212th Rescue Squadrons rescued three snowmachiners stranded in the Talkeetna Mountains on Feb. 25. Four snowmachiners had set out for a ride in the Talkeetna Mountains when they became stuck, according to Lt. Col. John Morse, deputy director of the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center.

JBER considering golf course closure

Anchorage may soon have one less golf course. A study began more than a year ago by Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and 673d Air Base Wing commander determined that base’s golf programs may have excess capacity.

Eagle River woman sentenced for sexual assault

Lagina Griffiths, 41, of Eagle River, was sentenced to four years of jail time for the offense of attempted sexual assault in the second degree. Griffiths pled guilty to this offense on Oct. 28, 2013.

JBER airman found dead

An Air Force Staff Sergeant was pronounced dead at his off-base residence on Feb. 23, according to officials at Joint Base Elemendorf Richardson. Samuel Davis, 33, was recovering from recent back surgery, according to his girlfriend, who placed the 911 around 6 a.m. Feb. 23.

Rondy memories

It’s Fur Rondy time. As my family and I make plans for what we want to see and do this year, I can’t help but remember our first Rondy. We arrived in Anchorage the end of January. The last week of February we were still in temporary lodging, and we had serious cabin fever.

Airman dies on JBER

Senior Airman Katrina M. Jackson, patrolman with the 673d Security Forces Squadron, was pronounced dead Feb. 15. The 22 year-old native of Universal City, Texas, died from injuries sustained from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while on JBER.
