KABUL, Afghanistan — It was just after 4 a.m., July 17. Many on the base at Kabul International Airport, and Forward Operating Base Oqab nearby, were still catching a last hour or two of sleep before the day would begin.

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON-- Driven by determination and trained in arctic survival, five paratroopers from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, along with one Soldier from the Army’s Northern Warfare Training Center and two Soldiers from the Vermont Army National Guard, scaled the highest point in North America June 15.
One nice thing about being stationed in Alaska is how supportive the local community is to the military and military families. Last week, the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce showed their love with their annual Military Appreciation Picnic.
My two middle children went to camp this week. I have missed them, but it is a great opportunity for them. I love living in a place where it’s just a few minutes’ drive to a camp where my children can enjoy the great outdoors. This is something I have always wanted my children to experience, but we were never able to do until Alaska. Camp was always somewhere far away; I wanted their first overnight camp to be close, just in case. I like that camp here is just a couple exits up the Glenn Highway.
