HOMER: Roan Hall, 16, of Chugiak, has become the first recipient of the AFS-Peter Larson Memorial Scholarship. Hall was awarded the $1,000 grant by Flo Larson and met with her at Finn’s Pizza on Monday. The funds will help support a year living and studying in Steinkjer, Norway, as an AFS exchange student.

Robert Rose thought he’d be cold spending this summer working at Camp Carlquist on the shores of Edmonds Lake in Chugiak. When I was growing up on a farm out in northwestern Pennsylvania, my mother would drive my three sisters and me the next town over to watch the fireworks. We’d lie on blankets itching mosquito bites and pinching one another as the darkness slowly descended, and as we waited we stuffed our mouths with candy (usually forbidden) and drank cold sodas (also forbidden) and fidgeted in that hushed and anticipatory moment that stretched on forever.
