Jamarus Spires, a 31-year-old man from Anchorage, died after falling from a cliff in the Eklutna area on April 12, according to the Anchorage Police Department. The next of kin have been notified. A woman called APD Dispatch around 4:15 p.m. that day and said her boyfriend had fallen off a cliff near Mile 1 of Eklutna Lake Road. The couple was out for a hike with two children, according to police. The man fell several hundred feet and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department, Mat-Com, and Alaska State Troopers air support responded but were unable to retrieve the body. Alaska Mountain Rescue Group responders were able to get to the body, but couldn’t retrieve it.
An SUV ran a red light at the corner of Old Glenn Highway and Eagle River Road on Tuesday evening, March 31, careening across a ditch and into three parked cars at the UAA Eagle River campus before smashing into the building where the Key Bank is located, knocking over one of the white decorative columns and bulldozing part of the inside of the building, according to police reports.
On Friday, April 3, Anchorage police cited Joshua Whittaker, 54 of Anchorage, for criminal mischief in connection with vandalism of mayoral candidate Amy Demboski’s campaign signs. Demboski posted a youtube video that shows her confronting Whittaker in the Fireweed Theater parking lot about the vandalism. In a statement she said she and some volunteers were waiting near those signs that remained undamaged in hopes of catching the vandal, and Demboski waited for about 20 minutes before she saw Whittaker approach her sign with a utility knife.
The Glenn Highway was closed for all inbound traffic near Eklutna Exit on late Friday afternoon, April 3 after a fatal accident that left two dead and two injured. According to Anchorage Police Department, at around 4:30 p.m. 38-year-old Derek Monk lost control of his Dodge Durango while driving in the right-hand outbound lane of the Glenn Highway. The Durango struck a vehicle in the left outbound lane, before going over the median and into inbound traffic, colliding head-on with a Santa Fe Hyundai.

ANCHORAGE (AP) — Federal aviation authorities are investigating claims by Eagle River residents that a drone equipped with a helicopter has followed children and hovered near homes. Anchorage police are also looking into the matter this week after receiving complaint calls from residents on Monday and Tuesday about a drone equipped with a camera following children home from school.
